The Soviet team, stocked with professional players, was highly favored to win the gold medal. The U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, composed of mostly college players, was not even expected to get a medal. Improbably, the U.S. team beat the Soviets and went on to win the gold medal.
